Robert Saleh captured the moment with his phone: Aaron Rodgers in a No. 8 New York Jets jersey carrying the American flag as he ran out of the tunnel for the season opener at MetLife Stadium on September 11. The fans were enthusiastic, cheering for Rodgers and what he represented for the franchise. However, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles four plays into New York’s first offensive drive of the season, forcing the Jets to recalibrate their expectations to seven wins. The Athletic spoke to 30 sources in and around the organization to understand the issues that contributed to a failed Jets season, where frustration between the defensive and offensive sides grew. Those sources described reasons explaining another season failure, such as a paranoid head coach, an unprepared offensive coordinator and an organizational tunnel vision focusing on the quarterback. The Jets declined the Athletic’s request for comment and Rodgers didn’t respond to a comment. This was the end of a disastrous season for the Jets, filled with many controversies and dilemmas.
