My wish for a future without the need for Pride Month to celebrate intersectionality

Logging onto social media channels in June reveals the celebration of LGBT Pride worldwide. Brands changing their logos to the rainbow flag symbolize support for the LGBTQ+ community, but is it enough? Is it genuine support or tokenistic? It’s important to look beyond surface-level actions and see what businesses are doing to champion the LGBTQ+ community year-round, not just for one month.

As an ally and leader, I acknowledge the responsibility to challenge the status quo and promote diversity. At my company, diversity is ingrained in our culture, with our founder being part of the LGBTQ+ community. Having leaders who represent diversity helps attract diverse talent and foster inclusion.

Creating a culture that celebrates individuality is essential for driving innovation and finding unique solutions. Embracing diversity in our team, especially in a diverse region like APAC, brings valuable insights and perspectives that lead to better outcomes in client projects.

Initiatives like the Diversity Type Project fuel debate and education among employees, promoting diversity in the creative industry. Collaboration with organizations like ‘Outvertising’ and the Diversity Standards Collective allows us to broaden our thinking and communicate inclusively with specific communities.

Actively engaging with different communities, seeking input from diverse sources, and promoting inclusivity in our work and workplace culture are essential steps towards breaking down barriers and championing equality in society.

As the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community grows in APAC, it’s crucial for business leaders to be active allies and advocates for equality. Embracing differences and promoting diversity will lead to a better work environment and society overall.
