Sources indicate that ex-Chelsea and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is a prime candidate to become the coach of the USMNT

Multiple sources briefed on the coaching search have revealed that former Tottenham and Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino is a top target for the U.S. men’s national team opening.

While the federation is still considering multiple candidates, Pochettino is viewed as a favorite by some, and U.S. Soccer is currently in discussions with his camp. However, U.S. Soccer has chosen not to comment on specific candidates for the job.

Bringing in Pochettino would be considered a major coup, particularly at a time when the U.S. fanbase is eager for a high-profile manager. Despite never having managed a national team, the Argentine has a strong track record at the club level, achieving notable success with various teams.

It is worth noting that U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker and Pochettino previously crossed paths during the Argentine coach’s tenure at Southampton. Crocker, who led Southampton’s academy at the time, left in November 2013 to join the Football Association.

Argentine outlet Olé previously reported Pochettino’s candidacy for the job, adding more credibility to the speculations.

Although there is a possibility of U.S. Soccer making an announcement before the September window, sources indicate that former U.S. under-20 men’s national team coach and current USMNT assistant Mikey Varas is set to lead the senior team in upcoming friendlies against Canada and New Zealand on September 7 and September 10, respectively.

The USMNT has been without a coach since parting ways with Gregg Berhalter post the Copa América group-stage exit this summer. Berhalter led the team from December 2018 to December 2022 and from June 2023 to July 2024, guiding them back to the World Cup after missing out in 2018.

Pochettino would bring a high level of prestige to the U.S., much like Jurgen Klinsmann did in the past. Known for his successful managerial style emphasizing positional play, pressing, and attacking, Pochettino could elevate the team’s performance to new heights.

In terms of finances, reports suggest that Pochettino commanded one of the highest salaries in the world at previous clubs. However, Crocker has emphasized the federation’s willingness to invest in securing a top-tier coach to achieve desired results on the field.
