UNICEF Issues $58.8 Million Appeal to Stop Outbreak in Africa: MPOX Alert

Dr Paul Ngwakum, UNICEF Regional Health Advisor for Eastern and Southern Africa, expressed concern over the impact of the mpox outbreak on children in Burundi. He highlighted that two-thirds of the nearly 600 reported cases are children under 19 years old, with a rapid 40% increase in cases over the last three weeks.

While Burundi has seen over 14,000 suspected cases of mpox, no deaths have been reported. In contrast, the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded nearly 21,900 suspected cases and 717 deaths.

Dr. Ngwakum emphasized the importance of funding and swift action to contain the outbreak in Burundi, stating that with concerted efforts, the virus can be contained and the outbreak stopped without any loss of life.

The UN agency is particularly concerned about the rise of mpox among children under five years old, who make up 30% of reported cases in both Burundi and DRC. Measures have been implemented in schools to educate teachers and parents, recognize symptoms early, and promote hand hygiene.

Dr. Ngwakum acknowledged the evolving nature of the situation and emphasized the need for updated messaging and response based on new information. Mental health support will also be provided to address stigma and hostility towards affected individuals.

Dr. Ngwakum clarified that mpox is not solely transmitted through sexual contact, dispelling myths and calming fears in communities. Dr. Margaret Harris from WHO explained the difference in suspected deaths between DRC and Burundi, attributing it to the humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC.

Overall, efforts are being made to combat the outbreak, educate communities, and provide support to those affected by mpox in Burundi and neighboring regions.
