The move of Jurgen Klopp to Red Bull may be unexpected, but it’s a logical step

As Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp avoided lengthy meetings, preferring important conversations over lunch at the training ground canteen. Mike Gordon, president of Liverpool’s owner Fenway Sports Group, viewed Klopp as a corporate leader with qualities suitable for running a company, as described in Raphael Honigstein’s book, Bring the Noise.

Beginning next year, Klopp will serve as Red Bull’s global head of soccer, overseeing the implementation of Red Bull’s “philosophy” across its clubs. This sudden decision comes after Klopp expressed fatigue upon leaving Liverpool in May.

This new role offers Klopp a less stressful reentry into the game he loves and may be a stepping stone towards coaching the German national team, a goal he has long desired.

Klopp’s appointment at Red Bull may help him explore a new aspect of the sport that intrigues him. Unlike his time at Liverpool, this role allows him to focus on broader responsibilities without the day-to-day pressure of managing a team.

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier also had a similar role at Red Bull, contributing to the organization in various capacities. Klopp’s involvement with Red Bull could enhance the brand’s reputation and introduce a more legitimate image to their football endeavors.

Klopp’s alignment with Red Bull may contrast with his previous positions at Dortmund and Liverpool, where he valued authenticity and criticized artificial elements in football. His role at Red Bull will determine how his reputation evolves, particularly in Germany.

While working for Red Bull, Klopp may influence the direction of Leeds United, a club with ties to the company, and potentially impact Liverpool’s future matches against them.

The appointment also raises speculation about Klopp’s relationship with Pep Lijnders, his former assistant at Liverpool. Despite recent setbacks, Klopp’s arrival at Red Bull could increase Lijnders’ chances of staying with the team.

For now, Klopp is stepping back from daily management duties, embracing a role that offers elite involvement without the intense pressure of being a manager. Whether Klopp can resist the allure of management in the long run remains to be seen.
