Believe it or not, we have already completed five weeks of the regular season, and there are reasons for both optimism and pessimism for all 30 teams in MLB. From those at the top of the power rankings to those at the bottom, every team has reasons to hope and worry in the 2024 season.
NL East
Atlanta Braves
Reason for optimism: The Braves boast the best lineup in baseball from one to nine, with a mix of athleticism, power, and speed. They have strong defenders at every position and the depth to handle injuries across the diamond. Despite slow starts from key players like Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson, and Austin Riley, the Braves still lead the NL East division early in May.
Reason for pessimism: The loss of their ace, Spencer Strider, to season-ending elbow surgery hurts their chances of defending their NL East title and winning another World Series.

Philadelphia Phillies

Reason for optimism: The Phillies have three starting pitchers with ERAs under 2.00, a strong rotation, and relievers performing well. Third baseman Alec Bohm is having a breakout season, providing significant offensive production.
Reason for pessimism: Some key players are struggling offensively, and the team needs to improve their hitting to compete with the Braves.

New York Mets
Reason for optimism: Manager Carlos Mendoza has done a great job with the pitching staff. Several pitchers have shown promise, and the Mets are competitive despite injuries and offensive struggles.
Reason for pessimism: The offense has been inconsistent, key players are injured, and the team may need to make tough decisions if performance doesn’t improve.
